A review of The Crusty Cob by EAGLE 6726 written on Friday 11th of March 2011
I WAS BORN,JUST BEFORE THE WAR, ON MITCHELL STREET
ANCOATS, MY FATHER HAD A MOTORCYCLE BUSINESS THERE,AND I WAS BORN ABOVE HIS SHOP.1937, HAPPY DAYS,
EVERY ONE CAME FROM NEAR AND FAR TO THIS LITTLE SHOP, ON BESWICK STREET, IT WAS THEN CALLED "BEECHES".
ON MY WAY TO SCHOOL EVERY DAY, WELL, NOT QUITE EVERY DAY, BECAUSE SOMETIMES I WOULD WAG IT, AND GO AND PLAY NEAR THE CANAL, FURTHER UP BESWICK STREET. YOU COULD GET THE LOVELY SMELL COMING FROM THE BAKERY AT THE BACK. I CAN SMELL IT NOW. MMMMMM
I WAS A BIT OF A RASCAL IN THOSE DAYS. "HAVEN'T CHANGED MUCH NOW, EITHER". WE WOULD GO IN,AND, MY MATES WOULD DISTRACT THE GIRLS BEHIND THE COUNTER, AND I WOULD SNAFFLE A COUPLE OF THE LARGE MEAT AND POTATO PIES, AND MAYBE A COUPLE OF JAM TARTS. THESE WOULD BE WOLFED DOWN AS WE STROLLED ALONG THE CANAL BANK, WITH A FISHING NET THAT I HAD MADE FROM A PIECE OF DADS WELDING ROD, AND AN OLD STOCKING, OF MY MAMS.!!!
WRITING THIS, HAS MADE ME FEEL RATHER PECKISH. IT'S
A ROUND TRIP OF NEARLY 15 MILES TO GO THERE AND BACK. BUT THAT'S WHERE I'M GOING NOW. I MUST ADD THAT I DON'T SNAFFLE THEM NOW,,,,ONLY BECAUSE I WOULD PROBABLY GET CAUGHT!!! IF YOU HAVE NEVER BEEN TO THIS SHOP. TREAT YOURSELF. ALL THEIR STUFF IS FIRST CLASS, AND THE STAFF ARE CHEERFUL. CHARMING. AND VERY HELPFUL...SEE YOU SHORTLY LADIES..XX EAGLE ====
